It’s live!
I thoroughly enjoyed joining Dale Pickles on The SENDcast to talk about play schemas — the repeated patterns of play that can tell us so much about how a child is exploring, thinking and learning.
For me, understanding schemas can completely change the way we interpret children’s play. Instead of asking “Why do they keep doing that?”, we can begin asking “What are they discovering by doing it?”
We talk about recognising schemas, what they may tell us about a child’s learning, and how adults can support rather than unintentionally interrupt them.
Since recording the podcast, my Early Years Neurodiversity Toolkit has been published. It includes an entire chapter on play schemas, together with practical resources for observing and supporting children’s play.
