Ange  is an advisor for SEN and graduated from the University of Birmingham with an M.Ed. in Special Education, She holds a Postgraduate Diploma in Dyslexia. Qualified in a number of therapeutic approaches for neurodivergent children, including therapeutic trampolining, vibroacoustic therapy, auditory integration training (AIT), dyslexia support and LEGO®-based therapy.

Throughout her teaching career she supported children with additional learning needs and, during the 1990s, alongside full-time teaching and progression into leadership roles, worked with the Gwent Dyslexia Association providing specialist teaching and teacher training in dyslexia intervention.

She established and led a voluntary community support centre providing affordable specialist support for children with literacy, developmental and additional learning needs. Initially focused on dyslexia, the centre evolved in response to growing numbers of families seeking her help for a wider range of difficulties. She trained volunteers and support staff to extend provision for local families.

She later gained the National Professional Qualification for Headship (NPQH) through the National College for School Leadership and went on to become headteacher of a leading special school in Wales for ten years, specialising in therapeutic and technological interventions. Prior to this, she held leadership positions within three special schools in England and the Channel Islands.

Her work has included the development and use of therapeutic interventions, sensory approaches and emerging technologies to support learning. The school she led was the first in the UK to establish a dedicated VR room for reducing sensory anxiety and supporting therapeutic desensitisation. She is qualified in a wide range of therapeutic approaches and continues to explore how technology, sensory understanding and environment influence wellbeing and development.

As headteacher of Ysgol Pen Coch, Ange’s leadership and the school’s innovative work received significant recognition from Estyn. Inspectors described her direction of the school as “outstanding”, judged its self-evaluation work to be “sector leading”, and identified its innovative approach to the curriculum as a strength of the school and the school received an Estyn award for Excellence. The awards recognised the 34 schools, colleges and other settings that were judged to be excellent for one or both of the overall judgements for current performance and prospects for improvement or in three or more inspection areas in the academic year 2016-2017.

A Commitment to Lifelong Provision

During her time as headteacher of Ysgol Pen Coch, Ange established after-school provision enabling adults with learning disabilities and complex needs to continue accessing specialist facilities and therapeutic opportunities. The school had resources that were difficult or impossible for many families to access elsewhere — including hoists, a hydrotherapy pool and therapeutic equipment such as a vibroacoustic bed, which she persuaded a charity to donate.

She could see no good reason for these facilities to stand unused simply because the school day had ended, or because someone had reached adulthood. Estyn recognised this work, noting that “The school offers valuable after school therapy sessions for adults with learning disabilities as part of its vision for meeting the long-term needs of its pupils and other members of the community.”

That principle remains central to Ange’s work today. She is a passionate advocate for special schools and their specialist facilities playing a greater role in providing lifelong opportunities for adults with complex needs, and does not want access to appropriate therapeutic, sensory and communication support to stop when formal education ends. opened and led a specialist school delivering innovative approaches to therapeutic, sensory and technology-supported education.

She delivers training nationally, speaks at conferences internationally, and continues to provide free guidance and resources for educators and families through her website, her YT channel, workshops, downloadable materials, podcasts, videos and online content.
