Introducing the Adapted VIP Play Skills Profile

Venturing Into Play (VIP) is a widely respected framework originally created by Caroline Smith in 2003 to support the observation and development of play skills in children.

In 2025, I adapted this profile to reflect the needs of neurodivergent children and contemporary play-based practice in inclusive settings.

My version includes updated language, expanded schema observations, and clearer formats for recording and reflection — designed for teaching assistants and educators working directly with small groups or individuals.🔍 Note on Inclusion
The adapted VIP Skills Profile and observation checklist are designed to support all neurodivergent learners — including those with profound and multiple learning disabilities (PMLD), complex needs, sensory impairments, or those who do not communicate using speech. Observations may look different for each child — from subtle cues like eye gaze, breath control, or stillness, to shared emotional resonance through rhythm, repetition, and presence.

This tool invites attunement and curiosity — not comparison. Every child’s play is communication.
