Self Regulation

Self regulation

Self regulation can be a difficult skill to learn if you are neurodivergent. Predictable routines and schedules help us all learn to self regulate. In a special school setting it is important to use songs to help children who are neurodivergent take part in these routines and schedules to develop self regulating skills . Opportunities for practising self-regulation are present throughout the day,  and songs remind children of these opportunities from  putting one’s coat on a peg to sitting and joining in a specific daily routine.

Songs are an especially fun way to practise self-regulation throughout the school day.

Songs encourage children to stop whatever they are doing ,listen and join in with the song and it’s actions ,which can be a ‘tidy up time’ song or even a self regulating behaviour song.

A song our pupils learnt was the well known Show me 5 song taken from the Incredible Years behaviour programme. It is used alongside sign language and was very effective in reminding children of good behaviour.

Show Me 5

Good Listening

Good talking

Good sitting

Good hands and

Good feet

Songs are probably part of what you are already doing on a regular basis with your neurodivergent child. . Did you realise you were helping them develop their self regulating skills?
