ALN Play-Based Training Day: A Transformational Experience

Over 120 teachers and teaching assistants recently joined me for a full-day training on using play as a purposeful teaching method for learners with ALN (Additional Learning Needs).

🦋 A Day That Began with Play

The day kicked off with a pass the parcel activity—with a prize and a discussion prompt in every layer. Participants explored how play aligns with the Welsh Government’s Four Purposes, setting the tone for the training ahead. (I even arrived dressed as a butterfly to symbolise transformation through play!)

🎲 Schema-Based Exploration

Using a signed rhyme, we explored the nine common play schemas, followed by hands-on games and toy-based challenges. Teams identified schemas in action, with the first to spot all nine winning a prize. Laughter and lightbulb moments filled the room.

🧠 From Play to Pedagogy

In the afternoon, we explored how to:

  • Deliver whole-class teaching and learning through play
  • Use observational tools and assessment frameworks
  • Apply my adapted ‘Venturing Into Play’ document to both group and individual support

All attendees received a free printed copy of the resource to take back to their setting.

💡 Practical Funding Guidance

The session ended with a walkthrough of grant opportunities available to support inclusive and sensory play environments. Many participants left with concrete ideas for how to enhance their provision.

⭐ Feedback Highlights

“I wish every training started like this!”
“I haven’t played like that in years—it reminded me why I do this job.”
“We’ll be using your framework straight away.”
