Music, Sound and Vibration in Special Education is a warm, practical handbook that takes you inside classrooms and shows what helps children with complex needs engage, relax and communicate. Ange Anderson writes with the assurance of someone who has tried, tweaked and learned alongside staff and families, and that grounded voice is this book’s greatest strength.

The structure is sensible and easy to dip into. Early chapters set out what therapeutic music is, then move into tools and approaches you can use tomorrow, from Soundbeam and Skoog to Eye Gaze, karaoke microphones and resonance boards. There are sections on transitional music, singing and signing, meditation and mindfulness, hydrotherapy with music, and vibro-acoustic work, each anchored by clear aims and case studies.

I especially valued the emphasis on inclusion and communication. The anecdotes feel genuine rather than glossy, and they show how sound and vibration can be the key that unlocks choice making or toileting cues or simply a calmer day. Policy templates, screening forms and assessment ideas make the book feel like a toolkit rather than a manifesto, which is ideal for busy SEN teams.

At points the coverage of apps and devices could be tighter, and readers new to the field may want more signposting on evidence quality. Yet the breadth is impressive, the tone is humane and hopeful, and the practicalities are never lost in jargon.

If you work in a special school or support children with SEND in any setting, this is a resource you will use. Read it cover to cover once, then keep it on the desk for planning, training and reminders that music is more than a lesson. It is a language, a sensory bridge and, here, a well organised invitation to do better by our most complex learners

Thank you to everyone who has read, reviewed, and recommended the book. Your encouragement means the world, and it’s wonderful to see my books resonating with so many people. 🌍💫
